Welcome

Hello, my name is Keimairra Haylock. I’m an ingenious, talented young lady who takes pride in working for what I have. Throughout this portfolio you will discover various essays I have developed. They vary from narrative stories exploring both utopian and dystopian worlds to an analysis of a poem written by the great Langston Hughes. During my senior year I’ve read numerous amounts of books and through Major Works Data Sheets and Literary Reading Journals I was able to dissect the text and get a full understanding. When able to get a break, I was able to volunteer in my community. My resume will provide all of the extracurricular activities and volunteering I did while I maintained to still excel in the classroom. I encourage you to explore my portfolio and learn of my future aspirations and plans for when I graduate Riverdale High School.

Fighting For My Dream

A wise man told me, “Happiness does not come from doing easy work but, from the afterglow of satisfaction that comes after the achievement of a difficult task that demanded our best.” This quote really explains how I feel about the career I want to pursue. As I get closer and closer to graduating I have decided that I want to become a Marketing Manager for a major corporation. I love the idea of getting dressed up to go to an office. I also have no preference of working with other or working alone. Furthermore, competing for a position is fantastic and goes very well with my personality. I like the concept of survival of the fittest. This would just bring a purpose every day when I wake up to go to work.

Initially, my aunt was the one who brought to my attention of pursuing a career in business. When I was in middle school I went to work with her one day and fell in love with just the atmosphere. Being inside a building around several people but also having your own little space was spectacular. Fortunately, going to work with my aunt brought to light that I don’t want to work for a computer company because I don’t want to work on a computer trying to fix other peoples computer problems. That is boring to me. I want to work for an established company that is well known either nationally or internationally. I don’t mind being on the computer completing tasks, however, I would like to have more personably relations.

Moreover, being a Marketing Manager, you have to be able to take charge. This type of responsibility excites me because you won’t have the entire baggage of owning a business or starting a business however, you still have to make sure everything is going well and everyone is doing their job. To be a Marketing Manager, you can’t be timid because people will take you weakness and use it against you. I know that I am not shy and by being the captain of the basketball team I am capable of taking charge. I am also comfortable with moving around to get the job done. While I was playing AAU basketball I was traveling all across the United States so I know that I am comfortable with flying here or there and staying awhile for business. You don’t really get to tour the state and that is similar to being in a business. There is little relaxation time. All of these experiences I have experienced will help me as I pursue this career. In addition, I have been taking a marketing class to help me understand in a deeper sense and improve my public speaking. I will also become an interne while I am in college so I can gain experience. Furthermore, I will take various classes in the business field to help me prepare for my career. I want to experience each class so I won’t be limited in doing just one thing.

In a nut shell, business is a competitive profession in which you have to be strong and willing to think outside the box to set yourself apart from the others. I believe that I will be extremely successful as a Marketing Manager. I believe that I already have some qualities of a Marketing Manager. I am able to make the tough decisions that many are unable to do. I know that you can’t make everyone happy and I am willing to do whatever it takes for the business. I am very ambitious and every day I am in school I am trying to figure out ways to brand myself; to set myself apart from my competition. I read one day that “Effort only fully releases its reward after a person refuses to quit.” I will never quit. I will never give up!

My Goals

My short term goal is to achieve a 95 or above in my AP Macroeconomics class on my report card at the end of this semester.  At this very moment I have an 88 in this class and we have another 4 weeks before the grades are sent to the county for our report cards. I plan on achieving this goal by beginning to study a week prior the test is given instead of the day before. Even though I am a great memorizer I believe that I can do twice a good if I give myself more time to look over the information. In addition, I will ask my teacher for extra credit. I don’t believe that he does this but if he doesn’t I will take any alternative he suggests.  Also I will begin going to his tutoring session. Even though I don’t need it very much, it will look good to the teacher if I go because he will see that I am really trying to excel in his classroom. Moreover, I will begin to ask a question when I don’t understand what he is saying. I usually try to figure it out on my own but it will be better if I engage with the teacher. Also, the social studies fair project is due in mid-December.  If I do great on this it will boost my grade up because it is worth 25% of my grade.

My long term goal is to start my own charity, in the next 5 years, for orphans in small countries.  The first thing I have to do is to find people with significant nonprofit experience so I can get started on the right track. I’ve already spoken to my school psychologist and close friends about starting it and they are all very excited. What made me want to do this is because even though I’m not living the lavish life, I know there are kids who have it worse than me and I want to do whatever I can to make their lives happier. My dad is from Ladyville,Belize, so naturally I chose a charity that is located where he is from. I believe that all kids want toys and something to play with or on and I know that children in Belize don’t have vast variety of choices as we do. The orphanage I want to give the first donations to is called Liberty Children’s Home.  Many love to donate to Africa which is great, but many people forget about the smaller countries and I want to change that. All of the donations I get will be going to small countries across the globe.

In about 10 years from now I plan to be in the prime of my career. I plan on being a Marketing Manager and a degree for this field should only take about five years. I plan on interning while I am in college mainly to gain experience so finding a job won’t be too stressful. Once I find the place for me I plan on excelling and climbing the scale as quickly as I can.  To ensure this goal can be reached I have already started building the necessary decisions in my life. 10 years from now I should be a very successful woman staying out of trouble and doing something I love to do.

In a nut shell, my goals are all priorities. I believe that it is important for me to get a high A in AP Macroeconomics because I want to increase my GPA and in order to do that I have to get high A’s in all of my classes and this is the only class that I worry about. Also I believe that it is a priority that I help the children who needs help that most people look over. It is easy to contribute to something that is already known, but I want to contribute to a change to what many do not know. A very long time from now I will be successful and because of the person I am I know that once established I will give back to the people who have helped me along the way.

Adversity

It was January 23, 2012; I had surgery on my left knee. This was the first surgery I ever had and the worst part of it all was that my worst nightmare comes true. The entire surgery was a fail. I was devastated. I was ranked in the top 15 percent in the nation for my position in basketball. I was expected to go to a top Division 1 college. What was I going to say to the coaches? A lot can change in two years. I knew they wouldn’t want me now since I was a liability; and I was right.
Initially I was so confused and upset that I went into a state of depression. I didn’t want to talk about my situation, I cried myself to sleep every night, I hated watching basketball, I hated talking about basketball, I hated everything about basketball, I began to feel heartless. I felt as if there was nobody in the world who could understand what I was going through. I was sick and tired of therapy because when you’ve done something right the first time and you are told that all that you have done was for nothing you don’t want to do it all over again however, I had to. I just couldn’t understand how all these colleges were fighting over me and now I have to beg them to even speak to me on the phone. I quickly learned that Universities are a business. It’s not about what I did, how I feel or even how they feel. Their career is in my hands. If they don’t win games they are penalized. So why would they risk everything they have on me?
Moreover, all summer I felt powerless. However, the closer we get to November the more better I feel about my situation. I recently went to the doctor and I received great new. If I keep working hard I will be able to come back sooner than expected. It is still a setback but I’m ready to make that incredible comeback. I’ve been out long enough and I can admit I needed a break but now I’m ready to do what I do best. In a few more months I will be on the court being that natural born leader I am supposed to be and I’m going to get a scholarship and go to a college that I want to go to and I will not settle.
In a nut shell, I know for a fact if it weren’t for my mom I wouldn’t be able to say with confidence that I will go to college paid for. She was the one getting on me to keep my grades up and to go to therapy. I thought it was over but I learned that it isn’t over until God says it’s over. I just want people to learn from me that even though you may feel as though you have nothing to live for or you feel there is no way out, you will prevail. By me being so positive I now will be getting a poster along with 4 other athletes and it will be put in a frame in the gym to inspire other students in the school. I am also being nominated to be in a movie for the county. The movie is supposed to be about student athletes who has been through adversity and are overcoming their problems and who are expected to go to a D1 University. I am so grateful to be put in the position to change people’s lives.
